Immigration Law and Practice guides students through thecomplexities of the underpinning legislation and the Immigration Rules, as wellas describing some key skills which all immigration practitioners will need. Chapter 1 explains the background and legal framework for the UK immigrationsystem, including its historical development.

Chapter 2 describes theprocedures for applying to come to or stay in the UK including the entryclearance system, electronic travel authorisation and controls on entry. In Chapter3 the appeal process against immigration decisions is described, including thelegislative framework and the powers of the First-tier Tribunal and the UpperTribunal.

Chapter 4 describes the operation of judicial review in immigrationcases, including the procedures and hearings. In Chapter 5 the powers ofimmigration officers and the Home Office to impose immigration detention areset out. Chapter 6 explains the rules which apply to people who just want tovisit the UK without intending to work or permanently settle.

In Chapter 7 thelaw and procedures applying to those wishing to come to the UK to work or studyare set out, including the points-based system and the special rules applyingto talented individuals and domestic workers. Chapter 8 reviews the rights ofpartners, children and other close relatives to enjoy family life in the UKwith British citizens or other settled family members.

The requirements includefinancial resources and language skills. In Chapter 9 the law governing thecontroversial area of refugees and asylum is explained. Chapter 10 explains theways in which British citizenship can be acquired. In Chapter 11 theapplication of the European Convention on Human Rights to immigration law isdescribed.

Chapter 12 deals with the administrative removal of people in breachof immigration law and those who have entered the UK illegally, as well as thedeportation of criminals. In Chapter 13 advocacy in the context of immigrationhearings and appeal is explained. Chapter 14 covers the drafting of keydocuments in immigration cases.

Finally, Chapter 15 covers the communicationskills which immigration practitioners need to develop.
