Occasionalism Revisited (inbunden, eng)

What if everything we see, experience, and understand is just an occasion for something deeper--an indication of a divine, underlying reality that governs all cause and effect? "Occasionalism Revisited" takes readers on a journey through one of the most fascinating theories of causality, where the only true causal agent is God, and all occurrences in the universe are but moments of divine creation.

This expanded and updated second edition, edited by Nazif Muhtaroğlu, weaves together philosophical perspectives from both the Islamic and Western traditions, exploring the roots and contemporary expressions of occasionalism. From its origins in the works of Islamic scholars like the Ash'arites and Māturīdites, to its evolution in the thought of European philosophers such as Malebranche and Berkeley, this book bridges historical insights with contemporary philosophical inquiry.

With contributions from leading scholars, "Occasionalism Revisited" explores how occasionalism has shaped discussions on causality, metaphysics, and theology across cultures and eras. It offers a rich analysis of how this intriguing doctrine intersects with current philosophical debates, making it an essential read for scholars and students alike who wish to uncover the deep interconnections between faith, reason, and the nature of reality.

For those looking to outline courses on occasionalism or deepen their understanding of its evolution, this book also provides selected readings and a comprehensive timeline. Whether you are well-versed in the philosophy of causality or a newcomer to the subject, "Occasionalism Revisited" invites you to reconsider the very nature of how and why things happen.
